Website design and development for large library system in British Columbia
Challenges
Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) required the implementation of a library-specific web solution that utilized an intuitive and adaptable content management system that would leverage responsive design for total alignment across all devices, screen sizes and browsers. An essential goal for the project was a seamless integration with the library’s catalogue and user accounts.
In addition, the website had to align to VIRL’s branding conventions and provide an attractive,
image-driven look and feel that users will embrace and wish to use on a regular basis.
Insights
The core insight that our proprietary process uncovered was that VIRL services over 30 branches across a large geographic area, and that a patron in urban Nanaimo has very different needs than a patron in remote and rural Murray Harbour. We needed to deliver a consistent yet personalized web experience for VIRL’s many website users.
Solutions
We designed a web solution that was fully customizable by the user by utilizing smart filters throughout the site. Users can specify their location, their interests, and their age range (Kids, Teens, Adults, Seniors, etc.) to give more relevant results for news, events, and collections. This combined with full integration with VIRL’s catalogue and other third-party apps led to a successful launch in 2018.
