Challenges

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is a community of 15,000 staff, physicians, researchers and volunteers that proudly serves Southwestern Ontario residents. In 2018, HHS selected Intent to completely reimagine their website, our largest website project ever.

Their legacy website was out of date, not compliant with accessibility requirements, was a collage of many microsites, and was too large and unwieldy for the client to manage. A specific challenge was finding a way to make it easy for users to navigate across 10 different locations to find the programs and clinics they needed.

Insights

Through our consulting process we learned that HHS wanted a single site that presented a unified organization (as opposed to distinct and independent locations), represent HHS as a world-class healthcare organization, appeal to several audiences including patients, visitors, caregivers, employees and more, and finally integrate with various features including wayfinding, accessibility tools, robust search functionality and more.

Solutions

The new HHS site launched in 2019 on budget, on time, and the client was “flooded” with positive feedback. Notably, for such a huge site, it uses only three main menu items, providing a hardworking and streamlined user experience. The site also provides an “I am a” concierge to help visitors quickly identify important information relevant to them. It is fully compliant with level AA accessibility, features a unique children’s section, merges all the hospital sites into one main site, and provides user-controlled features such as site selection, filtered directions to any of their five hospitals, and much more.
